    food intake
  • Eating is the ingestion of food to provide for all humans and animals nutritional needs, particularly for energy and growth. Animals and other heterotrophs must eat in order to survive: carnivores eat other animals, herbivores eat plants, and omnivores consume a mixture of both.

    calculator
  • Something used for making mathematical calculations, in particular a small electronic device with a keyboard and a visual display

  • a small machine that is used for mathematical calculations

  • A calculator is a small (often pocket-sized), usually inexpensive electronic device used to perform the basic operations of arithmetic. Modern calculators are more portable than most computers, though most PDAs are comparable in size to handheld calculators.

  • an expert at calculation (or at operating calculating machines)

    calorie
  • The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water through 1 °C, equal to one thousand small calories and often used to measure the energy value of foods

  • a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree at one atmosphere pressure; used by nutritionists to characterize the energy-producing potential in food

  • Either of two units of heat energy

  • The energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water through 1 °C (now usually defined as 4.1868 joules)

  • (caloric) thermal: relating to or associated with heat; "thermal movements of molecules"; "thermal capacity"; "thermic energy"; "the caloric effect of sunlight"

  • (caloric) of or relating to calories in food; "comparison of foods on a caloric basis"; "the caloric content of foods"

Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations

Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations

A complex interplay of social, economic, psychological, nutritional and physiological forces influence ingestive behavior and demand an integrated research approach to advance understanding of healthful food choices and those that contribute to health disorders including obesity-related chronic diseases.
Taking a multifaceted approach, Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations summarizes current understanding of environmental and physiological determinants of food choice and energy balance. The editors juxtapose pairs of chapters drawn from animal research and human clinical findings to highlight the synergies, and gaps in research approaches to highlight current knowledge and identify areas of needed and promising study.
Beginning with a theoretical consideration of the purported existence and functionality of mechanisms for the regulation of feeding and energy balance, the book progresses through a more detailed consideration of knowledge related to mechanisms recruited from the initial thought of eating through post-ingestive events. Chapters address preingestive motivational, cognitive, and orosensory processes that influence food selection and continue with critical reviews of intestinal and postabsorptive signaling systems and nutrient metabolism. The book concludes with a consideration of how the micro- and macro-nutrient composition of foods influences ingestive behavior and the physiologic consequences of consumption.
By comparing research from basic and applied scientific disciplines and knowledge from animal models and human trials, the editors provide a critical review of current knowledge of ingestive behavior and future research needs.

Fascination with food

Fascination with food

Fascination: Food, and I've been told it shows...HEY?!?!

Food, to me, is a fascination. The necessity of eating, the simple intake of energy, has culturally become a time of communion, celebration, relaxtion, and even romance. It's approached differently all around the world, and the variety is absolutely endless. I love observing the interaction of people around a table and the dynamics that sharing a simple meal can unfold.

Cooking is a very personal thing for me. It's an oppurtunity for relaxation, creativity, and connection. It allows me to share something of myself with the people in my life, and also gives me a conduit to the past. Vintage cook books show how not only how techniques have evolved, but also how technology, accessibility, tastes, and culture in general has evolved. Recipes and cookbooks from friends and family are treasures! My Joy of Cooking was my grandmothers, and flipping to her favorite recipes that are all splattered and stained, seeing margin notes in her handwritting, and reading the recipes and letters she stuffed between the pages is a connection to her life I can't get any other way.

The act of cooking and eating I find simplistic, and yet overwhelmingly fascinating.

Day Forty-Three: Eating Disorders

Day Forty-Three: Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders is characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individuals physical and emotional health. The causes of eating disorders are complex and not yet fully understood. Eating disorders are estimated to affect 5-10 million females and 1 million males in the United States. WHOOP! This image came out exactly how I hoped, natural and realistic looking. Also the only thing photo edited is the lighting, and of course putting the images together.

Food Intake in Fish

The intake of food by fishes is an area of study that is of great importance to the applied sciences of fisheries and aquaculture for a number of reasons. For example a thorough knowledge of factors influencing the ingestion of feed can lead to successful manipulation of the rearing environment of cultured fishes, thereby ensuring improved growth performance and feed utilisation, and decreasing the amount of waste (and consequent pollution) per unit of fish produced.

This important book, which has arisen out of a European Union COST programme, illustrates how insights into the biological and environmental factors that underlie the feeding responses of fish may be used to address practical issues of feed management.

Food Intake in Fish contains carefully edited contributions from internationally recognised scientists, providing a book that is an invaluable tool and reference to all those involved in aquaculture, especially those working in the aquaculture feed industry and scientific personnel in commercial and research aquaculture facilities. This book should also find a place on the shelves of fish biologists and physiologists and as a reference in libraries of universities, research establishments and aquaculture equipment companies.
