030/365: 30 Minutes or Less.. again!

030/365: 30 Minutes or Less.. again!

Today was the first time seeing some of my favorite people in a little over a week, since before my trip to San Fran and OH, how I missed them! It was Jovany, Juan, Josh, Hernan, Sarah, and Emily <3

Our first stop was the movie theaters where I highly suggested watching 30 Minutes or Less (after seeing it with some other friends yesterday) so we did and everyone laughed their asses off :3

After walking around the mall for awhile we headed across the street to ACME Bowl where we spent 2 hours in the arcade, kicking ass in bowling, and eating our hearts out.

We were so full we felt like we had to walk it off, so we went to the Tukwila Pond a few blocks away. Jovany and I wondered off without the group and found ourselves in the middle of a whole lot of thorn bushes (or sticker bushes, as Jovany kept saying) in the middle of the damn woods.. Me having to pee didn't help anything and stepping in the pond while doing so, really messed up my "grandma shoes."

After all that blood, sweat, and tears wasted going through the woods to burn off some calories, we stopped by McDonalds before catching the bus back home:3

The bus ride was the worst, but at the same time was so funny because we HAD to get on the bus that someone puked all over. It HAD to happen to us, and it HAD to be the last bus to take home. After awhile Hernan and I couldn't help but joke about the whole mess but it was still awful.

Jovany introduced me to a new dance move and talked about one of his biggest fears while walking me home. I left my house to meet up with them at 10:30 and I just finally got inside my house at 11:50 PM, and thank goodness Mama Bear's asleep :3

Good morning!

Walking along a logging track - 09.12.19

Walking along a logging track - 09.12.19

Another hot and sunny December day! Not complaining, but wonder what happened to the monsoon? :D
This logging track is used to ferry out harvested Acacia trees (Acacia plantation) and other trees from the area which is now being replanted with a new monoculture tree. Don't know what it is, could be a species of hard wood.
Hard to tell where the original kerangas is in this area because of the invasive, non native acacia popping up everywhere.

Did quite a bit of exploring today! After this place (too hot to do much exploring here!) we went on to explore the jungle near the Kalimantan border. Had fun while burning calories. Will upload the other photos as soon as I finish all of my Jagoi blog posts (just finished the main write-up).

Lemon Meringue pie

Lemon Meringue pie

Our Daily Challenge ... egg/chicken

Meringue is a type of dessert composed of fluffy beaten egg whites with sugar. It can be served in a variety of forms. All have a melt-in-your-mouth quality.
Soft meringues are lightly baked over pies and other desserts.
All meringues have a base of egg whites and include between 2 tablespoons and 1/4 cup of caster sugar per egg white
To make a meringue, whip egg whites until they form soft peaks. Then add sugar a spoonful at a time as you continue beating the egg whites, mixing until the sugar dissolves.
Soft meringues should be spooned over hot pie filling and then baked until golden brown.
The filling in lemon meringue pie uses the yolks as a thickening agent also.

    food intake
  • Eating is the ingestion of food to provide for all humans and animals nutritional needs, particularly for energy and growth. Animals and other heterotrophs must eat in order to survive: carnivores eat other animals, herbivores eat plants, and omnivores consume a mixture of both.

  • Something used for making mathematical calculations, in particular a small electronic device with a keyboard and a visual display

  • a small machine that is used for mathematical calculations

  • A calculator is a small (often pocket-sized), usually inexpensive electronic device used to perform the basic operations of arithmetic. Modern calculators are more portable than most computers, though most PDAs are comparable in size to handheld calculators.

  • an expert at calculation (or at operating calculating machines)

Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations

Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations

A complex interplay of social, economic, psychological, nutritional and physiological forces influence ingestive behavior and demand an integrated research approach to advance understanding of healthful food choices and those that contribute to health disorders including obesity-related chronic diseases.
Taking a multifaceted approach, Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations summarizes current understanding of environmental and physiological determinants of food choice and energy balance. The editors juxtapose pairs of chapters drawn from animal research and human clinical findings to highlight the synergies, and gaps in research approaches to highlight current knowledge and identify areas of needed and promising study.
Beginning with a theoretical consideration of the purported existence and functionality of mechanisms for the regulation of feeding and energy balance, the book progresses through a more detailed consideration of knowledge related to mechanisms recruited from the initial thought of eating through post-ingestive events. Chapters address preingestive motivational, cognitive, and orosensory processes that influence food selection and continue with critical reviews of intestinal and postabsorptive signaling systems and nutrient metabolism. The book concludes with a consideration of how the micro- and macro-nutrient composition of foods influences ingestive behavior and the physiologic consequences of consumption.
By comparing research from basic and applied scientific disciplines and knowledge from animal models and human trials, the editors provide a critical review of current knowledge of ingestive behavior and future research needs.

Fascination with food

Fascination with food

Fascination: Food, and I've been told it shows...HEY?!?!

Food, to me, is a fascination. The necessity of eating, the simple intake of energy, has culturally become a time of communion, celebration, relaxtion, and even romance. It's approached differently all around the world, and the variety is absolutely endless. I love observing the interaction of people around a table and the dynamics that sharing a simple meal can unfold.

Cooking is a very personal thing for me. It's an oppurtunity for relaxation, creativity, and connection. It allows me to share something of myself with the people in my life, and also gives me a conduit to the past. Vintage cook books show how not only how techniques have evolved, but also how technology, accessibility, tastes, and culture in general has evolved. Recipes and cookbooks from friends and family are treasures! My Joy of Cooking was my grandmothers, and flipping to her favorite recipes that are all splattered and stained, seeing margin notes in her handwritting, and reading the recipes and letters she stuffed between the pages is a connection to her life I can't get any other way.

The act of cooking and eating I find simplistic, and yet overwhelmingly fascinating.

Day Forty-Three: Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders is characterized by abnormal eating habits that may involve either insufficient or excessive food intake to the detriment of an individuals physical and emotional health. The causes of eating disorders are complex and not yet fully understood. Eating disorders are estimated to affect 5-10 million females and 1 million males in the United States. WHOOP! This image came out exactly how I hoped, natural and realistic looking. Also the only thing photo edited is the lighting, and of course putting the images together.

Food Intake in Fish

The intake of food by fishes is an area of study that is of great importance to the applied sciences of fisheries and aquaculture for a number of reasons. For example a thorough knowledge of factors influencing the ingestion of feed can lead to successful manipulation of the rearing environment of cultured fishes, thereby ensuring improved growth performance and feed utilisation, and decreasing the amount of waste (and consequent pollution) per unit of fish produced.

This important book, which has arisen out of a European Union COST programme, illustrates how insights into the biological and environmental factors that underlie the feeding responses of fish may be used to address practical issues of feed management.

Food Intake in Fish contains carefully edited contributions from internationally recognised scientists, providing a book that is an invaluable tool and reference to all those involved in aquaculture, especially those working in the aquaculture feed industry and scientific personnel in commercial and research aquaculture facilities. This book should also find a place on the shelves of fish biologists and physiologists and as a reference in libraries of universities, research establishments and aquaculture equipment companies.

Lighten Up: The HealthQuest 30-Day Weight-Loss Program

Designed to address the major health issues facing African-Americans, such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, Lighten Up: The HealthQuest 30-Day Weight-Loss Program uses a three-part approach -- nutrition, fitness, and body-mind-spirit awareness -- to provide a sensible plan for permanent weight loss, without sacrificing the foods folks love. Lighten Up is an eye-opening look at the relationship between African-Americans' chronic health issues and their ancestral diet, and it examines soul food (notoriously high in fat, sodium, and cholesterol) and the role it plays in the African-American community. The nutrition component of the plan includes five comprehensive food pyramids as well as instructions on how to adapt them to individual diets. The program is also bolstered by "Think It Through" and "For Your Spirit" exercises, using affirmations, meditations, and self-reflection to empower the reader. Finally, more than thirty delicious, low-fat, low-sodium adaptations of favorite African-American dishes are provided, along with two weeks of menus and meal and exercise planners. Lighten Up is a true path to permanent weight loss for African-Americans.

Javan Langur - Trachypithecus auratus auratus

Javan Langur - Trachypithecus auratus auratus

HABITAT : Recent studies in Java suggest that these monkeys have adapted to the loss of natural forest by feeding on the leaves of teak trees in commercial plantations.

DIET : These animals have a natural diet which includes large quantities of leaves. These might seem to be the ideal food for forest-living animal, but they have several disadvantages - in particular, they are not very nutritious, and often contain powerful toxins. Leaf-eating monkeys have developed a specialised digestive system to cope with these problems; like cattle and sheep, they have complex stomachs containing bacteria to break down the leaves and neutralise the toxins. Their stomachs also need to be large: in some species the stomach contents can make up more than a quarter of the total body weight, giving them a distinctly pot-bellied appearance!

CHARACTERISTICS : There are two colour forms, a black and a brown form. Most of the groups at Howletts and have a variety of individuals. Young Javan langurs have a coat colour different from that of their parents: they are bright apricot when born and acquire the darker adult coloration at three to five months old. Langurs are very agile. They swing, hang, and leap through the branches of trees high above the ground. Leaps can be up to 10 feet!

ENDANGERED STATUS & CONVSERVATION : Javan Langurs are very rarely seen in zoos; they have been kept at Howletts since 1984, and we are proud to say that over 100 have been bred here, some of them third-generation Howletts-born animals.!

The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens

Weight issues are one of the leading causes of teen depression.
Since you are reading the back of this book, I'm guessing that you picked it up because you relate, at least in some way, to some of the following statements:
I can't stand my body!
I don't know how to lose weight!
The other kids always make fun of me and call me fat!
I hate myself!

Well, I have some good news for you. Actually, I have some great news. By picking up this book, you have taken the first step to deciding to do something about your weight and your self-image. This book will give you the answers to the many problems that you have been facing. And it will give you a plan for dealing with those problems. And I will go through it all with you. Now get psyched! You are about to begin one of the most life-changing experiences of your life. -- JAY MCGRAW, FROM THE INTRODUCTION

As Jay McGraw says, The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens is a book that will change lives. Weight issues are one of the leading causes of teen depression, and The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens is being published at a time when weight is the top issue in so many teens' lives. Inspired by the enormous success of the #1 bestselling The Ultimate Weight Solution by Dr. Phil McGraw, Jay McGraw has written a book that deals with the specific issues teens face when it comes to weight matters. It's hard enough to be a teen, it's even harder to be an overweight teen. No one knows that better than the young people who suffer the teasing and name-calling that seem to resonate daily through their school halls. But what do you do when your friends are scarfing pizza and cheese fries and you're trying to lose weight? With this book, Jay addresses this and other problems in a way that they have never been addressed before -- in a way that actually works! Just as he did in his bestselling books Life Strategies for Teens and Closing the Gap, Jay talks directly to teens and young adults in a way to which they can relate. Jay gets it and he knows how to give it to them straight. The result is a book that can do what teens all over have been looking for -- a way to totally transform their bodies, minds, and lives.

The successful father and son franchise of Dr. Phil and Jay McGraw continues with The Ultimate Weight Solution for Teens. Here, Jay translates the seven keys that made Dad's diet book a mega seller into a smart, supportive teen manifesto for tackling unwanted pounds, body image problems and eating disorders. He uses examples and web postings drawn from his survey with 10,000 teenagers to underline a powerful message: "Weight is not about the size or your Levis or a number on the scale. It's about whether you use food to take care of your body or to abuse it." McGraw's approach is mind over milkshake, skewering the negative thoughts ("I can't have fun if I have to watch what I eat") that keep teens from experiencing "weight freedom." He examines self-defeating filters (denial, approval seeking , perfection, comparison)that distort a healthy approach to weight and also suggests a "peer and parent response plan" to avoid sabotage. He teaches how to scan the environment for eating cues. Even when McGraw rounds up the usual suspects--exercise and a sermon about sugar--he conveys a fresh and relevant message of self-knowledge. The wisdom of McGraw's approach to teen readers is this focus on thoughts and feelings, rather than on the third helping of pizza. --Barbara Mackoff
